PortionCheck Privacy Policy
Last updated: 4 September 2026
PortionCheck is made by White Digit (“we,” “us”). This policy explains what PortionCheck does with your information. The short version: PortionCheck has no accounts and no servers of its own. Your food log stays on your iPhone and in your own iCloud. We cannot see it.
1. What we do not do
- We do not require an account, email address, phone number, or name.
- We do not run analytics, crash reporting, or advertising SDKs.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data with data brokers or advertisers.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and PortionCheck never asks for tracking permission.
- We do not have a server that receives your food log, photos, weight, or health data.
2. Information stored on your device
PortionCheck stores the following on your iPhone so the app can work:
- Your profile: goal, sex, age, height, weight, activity level, training days, and unit preference.
- Your daily calorie and macro targets.
- Your food log: meals, foods, portions, calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, and weight entries.
- Foods you have logged before and meal templates you create.
- Meal photos and progress photos, if you choose to keep them.
- App settings and reminder preferences.
This data is protected by iOS device encryption, and photos are stored with complete file protection. Meal photos are excluded from iCloud Backup. Progress photos are included in your device’s iCloud Backup (if you have it on) so they survive a device restore; that backup belongs to your Apple Account and we cannot access it. Neither kind of photo is synced between devices or sent to us.
3. iCloud sync
If you are signed in to iCloud, PortionCheck syncs your profile, targets, food log, weight entries, templates, and weekly reports between your iPhones using your private iCloud database (Apple CloudKit). This database belongs to your Apple Account. We have no access to it and no ability to read, export, or restore it. Apple’s handling of iCloud data is described in Apple’s privacy policy. Meal photos and progress photos are not synced through this database.
You can turn off iCloud sync for PortionCheck in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud.
4. Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute
Photo, voice, and text meal logging, and the weekly report, are analyzed by Apple’s Foundation Models through Apple Intelligence. Requests are sent first to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute and fall back to the on-device model when needed.
What is sent: a reduced-size copy of the meal photo (at most 1024 pixels on its longest side), or the text you typed or dictated, together with a short instruction describing the task. For the weekly report, a summary of your week’s totals and targets is sent. No name, email, identifier, or location is included, because the app has none.
Apple states that data processed by Private Cloud Compute is used only to fulfil the request, is never stored, is not accessible to Apple, and is not used to train models. We do not receive any of this data. You can read Apple’s description at apple.com/privacy.
Photo and voice logging require an iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled. If it is off, those features are hidden and the rest of the app works normally.
5. Voice logging
Speech is transcribed on your device using Apple’s speech recognition. Audio is not sent to us. The first use may download a speech model from Apple for your language.
6. Barcode lookups (Open Food Facts)
When you scan or type a barcode, PortionCheck sends only the barcode number to Open Food Facts (world.openfoodfacts.org), a non-profit open food database, to retrieve the product’s name and nutrition values. The request carries a standard app identifier (“PortionCheck-iOS”) and no personal information. Open Food Facts may log the request under its own privacy policy at openfoodfacts.org. Products you have looked up before are cached on your device and are not requested again. Nutrition data from Open Food Facts is made available under the Open Database License.
7. Apple Health
With your permission, PortionCheck:
- Reads your weight, height, date of birth, and sex, only when you tap “Fill from Apple Health” during setup or in your profile.
- Reads your workouts, only if you turn on the optional “training day from workouts” setting.
- Writes calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, and weight entries that you log in PortionCheck.
Health data is read from and written to the Health app on your device. It is never sent to us or to any third party, is never used for advertising or marketing, and is never sold. You can change or revoke Health permissions at any time in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → PortionCheck. Deleting a meal in PortionCheck also deletes the samples it wrote to Health.
8. Purchases and subscriptions
PortionCheck Pro is sold through Apple’s App Store. Apple processes the payment; we never see your payment details.
To confirm your subscription across your devices and prevent fraud, PortionCheck uses RevenueCat, a subscription management service. RevenueCat receives your App Store purchase receipt and a randomly generated anonymous identifier created on your device. This identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any other personal information, because PortionCheck does not have any. RevenueCat uses this data to validate purchases and unlock Pro (app functionality) and to show us aggregate subscription statistics (analytics). RevenueCat’s privacy policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Our App Store privacy label therefore lists one item: Purchase History, not linked to you.
9. Siri, widgets, and Spotlight
Siri requests, Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, and Spotlight suggestions are handled by iOS on your device using data stored locally by PortionCheck. Nothing is sent to us.
10. Notifications
Reminders are scheduled on your device. PortionCheck does not send push notifications from a server and does not collect a notification token for marketing.
11. Deleting your data
- Delete a meal, weight, or photo: swipe or use the menu on the item. Related Apple Health samples are removed too.
- Delete everything: Profile → Delete All Data removes every record and photo on the device, deletes the synced copy from your private iCloud database, cancels reminders, and removes the Health samples PortionCheck wrote. The app returns to first-run setup.
- Deleting the app removes local data. Data in your private iCloud database remains under your control and can be removed with Delete All Data before uninstalling, or from iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.
Purchase records held by Apple are subject to Apple’s policies. Anonymous purchase records held by RevenueCat can be deleted on request: contact us and we will pass the request on.
12. Data retention
We retain nothing, because we receive nothing. Data on your device and in your iCloud stays until you delete it. RevenueCat retains anonymous purchase records for as long as needed to service your subscription and as described in its policy.
13. Children
PortionCheck is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone. Calorie targets are computed with safety minimums that cannot be lowered.
14. Your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another region with data protection laws, you have rights to access, correct, delete, and port your personal data, and to object to or restrict its processing. Because PortionCheck keeps your data on your device and in your own iCloud, you exercise these rights directly: the app lets you view, edit, export to Apple Health, and delete everything. If you believe we hold any personal data about you, or you want help with a RevenueCat deletion request, contact us and we will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
15. Third parties summary
| Service | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Apple (iCloud, Apple Intelligence, Private Cloud Compute, Health, App Store) | Your synced log; meal photos or text for analysis; purchase | Sync, AI analysis, Health integration, payment |
| Open Food Facts | Barcode number only | Product nutrition lookup |
| RevenueCat | App Store receipt, anonymous device identifier | Subscription validation and statistics |
No other third party receives any data from PortionCheck.
16. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top and, for material changes, note it in the app’s release notes. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
